Grassroots lobbying is simply the art of communicating with your elected officials on issues that are important to you.

Remember your lawmakers are elected to represent your interests. They need to stay in touch with you—or face the prospect of losing their jobs at re-election time. Likewise, you need to stay in touch with your elected officials—or live with legislation that doesn’t represent your views. As a consumer, taxpayer and citizen you’ve got the power to influence your legislators' votes.

  • Many people believe their letters and e-mail to Congress aren’t ever read. This simply is not true. You can be certain your letter or email will be read by an aide or the legislator—and answered. While the U.S. mail is still a good way to stay in touch with elected officials at any level— federal, state, county, or local—e-mail is gaining in popularity over “snail mail". In a growing number of cases the legislators prefer email to regular mail.

  • When you call you will almost always speak with a staff person, and not the legislator directly. Do not feel as though you have been put off. In fact, when calling, ask to speak to the legislative aide who handles child welfare and child justice issues. This person serves as the eyes and ears of the member and is the person the legislator relies upon to learn how an issue affects their district.
